The Lower
Rio Grande Valley of Texas is the home of Atascosa Outlook LLC.
This beautiful bed & breakfast is located on the Arroyo Colorado
in Arroyo City, Texas. On site owners, Larry & Fran Wolpin,
cater to the passion for fishing, birding, butterfly sighting
and hunting in the lower Laguna Madre area. Atascosa Outlook is
centrally located between Port Mansfield and Port Isabel on the
way to the bay behind South Padre Island.
Wildlife abounds in this unique Tip of Texas! The 50,000 acre
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge surrounds the area and
the north entrance at Adolph Thomae County Park is 5 miles away.
The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge and the South Padre Island
National Seashore are pleasant drives from Arroyo City. The Lower
Rio Grande Valley is also home to some of Texas' best state parks.
These include Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley, Estero Llano Grande,
and Resaca de la Palma. The World Birding Center (WBC) has satellite
locations in many valley cities, the closest being Harlingen.

What
surprises are in store?
Fishing
- Fishermen enjoy wade fishing, drift fishing, fly fishing, and
bait casting for the one that doesn't get away. Coastal and pier
catches can include redfish, speckled and sand trout, flounder,
sheepshead, croaker, skipjack, and drum. Bay fishing guides are
locally available.
Birding
- According to the latest checklists, 510 species and four sub-species
of birds can be found in just the four counties of the Lower Rio
Grande Valley. This is more than any other region in the country!
Rare species include the Green Jay, Hook-Billed Kite, White-Collared
Seed Eater, Great Kiskadee, Tamaulipas Crow, Brown Jay, Couch's
Kingbird and Ringed Kingfisher. Coastal Great Blue and Little Blue
Herons, cranes, white and brown pelicans and Roseate Spoonbills
abound.
Butterfly
Sightings - The NABA International Butterfly Park and the WBC can
offer a Valley-wide checklist of butterfly species throughout the
season.
Hunting
- The first two weeks of September are a White Wing hunters' paradise.
This is the only region in the United States where white wing dove
may be taken. Larger game such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey,
javelina, nelgui, and quail may also be taken at hunting leases
in the area. Two lotteries, one for rifle and one for bow, are held
each winter in order to hunt on the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife
Refuge.
Visit
Mexico - Valley towns are all unique but our local border towns
are an hour away and offer a taste of life south of the border.
Great restaurants and shopping adventures await the adventurous
traveler.
